Battle of the Ages

July 28, 2009 - 12:17pm

Young vs old, energy vs experience, lean meat vs aged beef - the 10th of July 2009 marked the inaugural Finity 'Battle of the Ages', where months of debate over who held the right to be tagged the 'supreme sporting generation' was finally decided.

The 'Golden Oldies' (over 30's), sporting tracksuit attire squared up against the lycra-wearing 'Young Stars' (under 30's), in an Olympic style sporting competition held at the KGV centre, Sydney. The two hour pentathlon consisted of some Finity favorites (indoor soccer and tug-of-war) and some games that took us back to primary school (dodgeball, tunnel ball and a three legged ping pong and spoon race). On the line was a team trophy and most importantly, pride.

We started the afternoon with a game of indoor soccer. With the under 30's having the speed and skill, the over 30's were forced to use their size and physicality to their advantage - crunching tackles were flying in left, right and centre.  A see-sawing match eventually tilted towards the under 30's - their stamina eventuating in several late goals to claim victory.

Next was a twist on an old favourite, the three legged ping pong and spoon race. The over 30's superior balance, coordination and teamwork resulted in a resounding win. Tunnel ball followed, with each team creating a 14 person tunnel - quite a challenging task! The under 30's ability to bind together and stay cool under pressure meant they ran out winners.

We moved on to the game that the under 30's were dreading and the over 30's were relishing - the tug-of-war. It was an utter mismatch, with the over 30's being too powerful and experienced - an easy, but satisfying victory for them.

A grueling afternoon culminated with the 'Battle of the Ages' being decided in the final game - dodge ball. The match was chaotic, with both teams desperate to take home the title, resulting in several nasty injuries - a sign of the competitive nature of the afternoon. Again, the tactics of the over 30's overwhelmed the youngsters, as they sailed to victory.

The inaugural 'Battle of the Ages' trophy was lifted by the over 30's, who now hold bragging rights until next year. A special thanks to all that were involved in making the day run smoothly.
