Risk Equalisation 2020 – Is the current system sustainable?
Since the 1950s, private health insurance (PHI) has needed a form of risk equalisation to support community rating. With the risk equalisation pool continuing to grow faster than total hospital payments, the longevity of the current arrangements is unclear. This article examines the sustainability of the current risk equalisation arrangements.

Commercial Lines Pricing Seminar 2011 – Getting the best out of NCPD
Estelle Pearson and Alice Huang presented to the Finity Commercial Lines seminar on 4 May on the National Claims and Policy Database for liability and professional indemnity insurance business. While identifying some of its limitations and ways in which some of these shortcomings might be addressed, they found a considerable amount of useful analysis that can be undertaken and suggested this is an area that the industry as a whole might wish to address with APRA. Risk Appetite – Finding the Right Balance
In recent months APRA have increased their attention on risk management, aiming to improve the industry’s performance n this are. One specific area of focus is each insurer’s risk appetite.
Furthermore, many insurers are reviewing their Risk Management Framework (RMF), including risk appetite, in light of testing events such as the Global Financial Crisis (or GFC, where most losses arose in areas other than Australian general insurance) and unprecedented locan and offshore natural catastrophes.
In this article we share some thoughts based on our experiences, describing how insurers might tackle this tricky subject and clearly state how much risk (and which types) are suitable for them.
