What is it like to work at Finity?
The best thing about working at Finity is the opportunity to work with industry experts. We have experts in all fields of actuarial work such as reserving, pricing, capital modelling and enterprise risk management. When you are stuck with a problem, there is ALWAYS someone who can help you out and share their experiences with you.
What do you work on?
So far, I have worked on several reserving projects and a pricing project. The biggest insurer I work on writes more than 40 insurance products! I have developed technical skills in SAS and Excel. The most important thing I have learnt, and which I am still learning, is effective communication. In consulting it is essential to effectively communicate results to our clients. I learnt this through practising and working closely with Finity principals and consultants.
Why did you choose Finity?
I always wanted to work in general insurance consulting. I chose to do my internship at Finity because we are the leading consulting firm in the industry. I chose to stay because I liked the culture. The work environment is professional and fun. We have social events such as poker, trivia and games nights, morning teas and drinks to raise funds for charity. Oh and exam dares, the best way to celebrate your success with the whole firm!
Do you have a tip for graduates?
The most important thing for a grad to consider when applying to Finity is ‘does consulting suit me?’ If you have strong academic results AND like talking to people to help them resolve their problems – consulting is for you! To be honest, we do work hard, but hard work pays off. There is financial reward and more importantly the knowledge you develop is invaluable for your career.
Are there rewards for your hard work?
The most rewarding part of work is recognition from the principals and consultants for a job well-done. At Finity, people care about your career progression and help you plan for your future. Our performance review process allows everyone (your peers, managers, people you manage) to give you constructive feedback and help you develop. I have regular catch-ups with my manager and my mentor who gives me insightful advice. Last but not least, the financial rewards too Our salaries and bonuses are really transparent and a great reward for hard work.
